How Your Flowers Will Change (before & after)

The nature of floral preservation means your flowers will change. Think of it as another stage in their ongoing evolution from seed to bud to bloom.

Just how your flowers will change depends on two main elements – the type of flower you choose, and your preservation method. Obviously, pressed flowers will look a lot different to how they looked fresh.

Flowers are naturally fragile and delicate – this is part of their beauty. The changes they go through during preservation are just part of their life cycle, and while they will look a little different, they’re no less beautiful than the day you held them.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re imagining how your bouquet will look once it’s preserved or pressed.

Translucent Petals

Resin preservation

Flowers are delicate. Through their journey from the farm, through to your florist, and then from you to us, your flowers are well-handled. Because of this, it’s natural that they will experience some gentle knocks. This shows they’ve lived a life – maybe as you walked down the aisle or celebrated a special person. Bruising and imperfections are a natural feature of your flowers – all flowers have these.

The resin preservation process can make these small imperfections more noticeable. They appear as translucent spots on the petals. This is unavoidable. These translucent areas simply tell part of your story.

If a flower is noticeably damaged on arrival, we’ll avoid using those blooms if possible.

Colour Changes

Pressed & resin preserved

The colour and intensity of your flowers will change during the preservation process. Some flowers will have striking colour changes, while others will simply lose some of the original vibrancy. Regardless of how the colours change, they still hold their natural beauty.

If you want your flowers to show more of their original colour, we can retouch them through our Colour Correction process.

It’s important to keep in mind that colour changes are an expected, normal part of the preservation process. Colour changes can be most significant for pressed floral frames, as these flowers undergo a dramatic transformation from their original form.

White flowers will tend to become creamier and buttery, with yellowish tones.

Red flowers will typically darken into a deep burgundy. Pink flowers can fade into a lighter pale pink or lighter lilac/purple tones. Some flowers will have stronger yellow tones.

Shape Changes

Pressed & some resin preservation

It goes without saying that pressing flowers will dramatically change their shape and appearance. Many resin flowers will undergo a transformation, too. This depends on the type of bloom, and the design you choose.

While we take great care to delicately lay out each flower for pressing, mother nature has the ultimate say in how your flowers transform.

Colour Fade

Even once your flowers are pressed, preserved and framed, they will continue to gently fade over the years. This is all part of the process, as they remain a natural, delicate material.

As well as the variety of your flowers, exposure to sunlight and UV plays a significant role in how quickly your flowers fade over time. Where you choose to display your pieces is important – we recommend keeping them away from harsh, direct sunlight. If you’re intending to display your flowers in an area that is quite bright, we suggest considering Colour Correction to help reduce their fading.

All natural beauty changes over time. Think of the gentle colour fade of your pressed wedding bouquet as a romantic measure of your time spent together.
